Kai Koura

Title: Kai Koura

30 x 31 x 11 cm

This handwoven bag/kete is created from New Zealand flax.

The leaves are harvested. Each flax strip is then removed, selected and softened. Next they are dyed; and all this before being carefully woven into this kete/bag. Handles are plaited on and then the completed bag is dried to shape.

This kete measures 30 cm along the base, 31 cm tall and a width of 11cm. (12” x 12 ¼ “ x 4 ¼ “)

The design of this kete is about the blues of the ocean and the orange of the crayfish or Koura. Kai is ‘food, eat, dine’. These are the colours of Kaikoura, on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. I also love the contrast of orange and blue.

The colours are almost random and unpredictable, as is life.

This is a unique artwork; there will never be another one like it.

I have been weaving for more than 30 years and enjoy the creative process as each piece comes into being.
